Stand-up comedian Max doesn't have much to laugh about at the moment. His career is in a permanent crisis, his wife Jenna has left him and taken their son Ezra, who has Asperger's syndrome, with him. Now the man in his mid-forties is living with his eccentric father Stan again. But when he unceremoniously takes Ezra on a road trip across the USA, events come thick and fast.
Families are ... complicated! Played by a great ensemble (including Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Robert De Niro, Whoopi Goldberg), the film takes cinema-goers on a furious father-son trip in which father Max usually takes a wrong turn and rarely says the right thing. A journey that will change their lives forever.
EZRA is a wonderfully warm-hearted and wise film about a father's unconditional love for his son and the challenges of being different.
The film was directed by actor, director and film producer Tony Goldwyn (BETTY ANNE WATERS, DEXTER, SCANDAL), who can also be seen in a supporting role in front of the camera. His long-time friend and colleague Tony Spiridakis wrote the sensitive screenplay, drawing on his own experiences with his autistic son. Leading actor Bobby Cannavale (I, TONYA, THE IRISHMAN, NINE PERFECT STRANGERS, OLD DADS) is convincing in one of his finest roles as the overburdened father Max. The third generation is congenially embodied by Hollywood legend Robert De Niro (KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, THE IRISHMAN, JOKER, MAN NEVER LEARNS OUT), who also has a son on the autism spectrum. EZRA - A FAMILY STORY is also a project close to his heart. The family drama also boasts a high-calibre cast, including supporting roles with stars such as Whoopi Goldberg, Vera Farmiga and entertainer Jimmy Kimmel. EZRA - A FAMILY STORY already wowed festival audiences in Toronto in 2023, Miami and Cleveland (2024). The drama also won Best Film at this year's festival in Sun Valley and the Boulder International Film Festival, where Bobby Cannavale was also honoured as Best Actor in a Leading Role.
